We were delighted to partner with Screen South for a second year to deliver the BFI Film Academy Short Course over the October half term. This free, week-long programme led by award-winning filmmakers Nick Milton and Rebecca Marshall, brought together 14 young people aged 16–19 with a shared passion for filmmaking.
Participants took part in a series of inspiring workshops and masterclasses led by industry professionals, designed to deepen their understanding of the screen industries while developing their creative, technical and production skills. Highlights included a screenwriting workshop with Louise Coulthard, a masterclass on short films and the film festival circuit with Jaine Green, and a session on costume design with Cosprop’s Deputy General Manager, Mia Wallden.
As the course progressed, the group gained hands-on experience across all stages of film production. They explored the role of the producer, learned about pre-production planning, and developed practical skills using professional camera, lighting and sound equipment. Participants also built their understanding of production design and costume, and gained valuable experience shooting on location.
By the end of the week, the young people had written, acted in, and filmed two projects: a short film titled Cycles and an accompanying mockumentary. Both films will be screened in Hastings and London alongside other BFI Film Academy short films, marking a fantastic achievement for everyone involved.
