We invite schools and local groups to join us on an Experience Day to take part in free creative and educational activities. See an original toy theatre show, visit the museum, and get creative in one of our puppet-making and art workshops inspired by the performance and museum. Our offer meets multiple aspects of the Key Stage 2 and 3 curriculum including art, history, design technology, literacy and drama.
Priority dates for Summer 2022 are 27 June to 8 July.
The Experience Day will include:
The Smuggler! By TouchedTheatre
An original toy theatre show inspired by the dramatic real histories of smuggling on the south coast. Drawing on the traditions of rhyming verse and outlandish performance perfected by the original toy theatres of the Georgian period, this uproarious and visually stunning show features madcap puppetry, live singing and lashings of... ribena.
Our Museum features a collection of period toys, puppets and theatre sets dating back to the 18th Century. Imagine what it was like to be a child growing up through the ages, and explore a world of puppets and toy theatre sets from around the world.
Take part in puppet making and art workshops inspired by the performance and museum. Children will have the chance to make their own toy puppet theatre and devise a short show.
You will be provided with a Teaching Resource Pack with pre and post-visit lesson ideas and activities.
Priority dates for Summer 2022 are 27 June – 1 July or 4 – 8 July.
It is possible to book a museum visit outside of these dates, but it is unlikely to include a show.
A day is expected to be 10am – 2pm but we can work around your schedule.

The Barn Theatre and Museum is in a rural location and can only be accessed by minibuses – not coaches. We can support your transport arrangements if needed.
We are committed to making the experience as accessible as possible – please talk to us about your access needs. There is level access across the site, a hearing loop in the theatre and we can offer a BSL Interpreter for your visit.
